Sallie Mae 5% back on first %500 of gas and/or groceries, 1% all else - cash back. Downside, you have to request the CB as it is not automatic. You also get 5% apparently at Super Targets and Super Walmarts. 5% back on books, and it appears that it includes much more than books at Amazon. Bonus first 90? days if you spend X amount ($500?) - easy for me based on groceries and bills.
PenFed
CB used to be the best around, but now is my gas only CC - 5% (not much on anything else, but goes right back as deduction on the statement as received.
They are trying to convert folks to points rewards card - 5 pts gas, and points for other categories - but you have to mess with points rather than cash back.
Apparently there is a good Fidelity card out there but not sure if available for NEW enlistments.
Oh - and none are worth it unless you pay your FULL BALANCE every month before the DUE DATE so you don't carry interest. Duh! You would think that would be obvious, but - apparently not.

For me, paying cash is a psycological reminder to be frugal. And I only buy from stations that give me a discount for paying with cash.

The only problem is that gas stations charge 10 cents more when I use a credit card. Is it really worth it?

Use a VISA card myself, earns about 1 point per dollar (?) I then cash in points for BP gas cards when I accumulate enough.

Sorry for not answering the question last post:
Discover is giving 2% cashback bonus for the first $250 gas purchase each month, as of today, March 24, 2012. That is really not so much when you consider it's 2 cents on the dollar and you're paying on the average 10 cents more per gallon plus interest on the balance if you have one. So for 10 gallons at $4.00/gallon, you're paying an extra $1.00 for credit (10 X .10) and getting back 8 cents (2% X $40).
I use Discover, but if they take debit for cash, then I use that.

I would like to know why they are allowed to charge more for credit? Their argument that the card companies charge them fees doesn't hold water when you consider that they are the only merchants engaging in this practice, and you don't see it outside of the metro NY area.
I also want to know why there are no regulations regarding how they post their prices... they post their cash price, but that is deceptive when you consider that the credit prices vary by 6 to 10 cents per gallon, so you can't compare unless you drive in and out.
Gulf on Express Drive South in Ronkonkoma is charging $1.00 over cash price to use a credit card. Isn't this gouging? I reported it to Gulf Oil and to the Atty General. I was almost out of gas when I pulled in. When I saw that I was outraged and left... I'd push it to the next station rather than pay an extra $14 for a tank of gas.

The only one I've found that still gives decent rebates is the BP card. I think it's 5% on all BP purchases and 1% on all other purchases. But, they don't pay anything on non-BP gas purchases.

Don't use credit/debit most of the time. There are local deals like our Food Maxx - if you spend 25 dollars on groceries, you get 10 cents a gallon off. I do that when I need things from their store.

I just have a Walmart credit card with a low balance, and the only thing I could think to do to pay 3 cents less at Sam's for gas was to charge it, and then just pay the amount charged off before my payment is due. Maybe it was a little less somewhere down the road, but if I'm not going thata way, I'll just pay the few cents extra.

Why don't you people get this.
The credit card companies are NOT giving this stuff away for FREE?!?!?!?
The rebate is paid for by the exorbitant fees charged for the credit card transaction. If the fees were lower (or, God forbid - didn't exist), prices, overall, would be significantly lower - in some cases up to 6-7% lower.
The use of credit and debit cards has only raised prices. And, I am as guilty as anyone. I almost never carry cash anymore and use my check/debit card for everything.

Your Chase Freedom card is in fact paying 5% cash rebate this quarter...in the event you missed their notice via e-mail.
That equates to a .20 per gallon savings at today's price here in AZ.

I don't use credit cards to buy gas, although maybe I should. I wouldn't spend nearly enough for the AMEX 6500 limit, but I would probably earn a few bucks here and there. I've been debating the UPROMISE but have my doubts.

The AMEX Blue deal also includes groceries, so once you hit $6500 on your combined gas and groceries for the year, you jump from 1 1/2% back to 5% back.

In addition to what Citadel68 says, Discover gives 5% back on gas this quarter (and also the third quarter of 2012). COSTCO doesn't accept neither Visa, no MasterCard, no Discover, so it pays to use their own COSTCO American Express card to pay there for gas. It gives 3% back (and the business AmEx from COSTCO gives back 4% on gas).

The Chase Freedom UltIMate Rewards card is giving a 5% rebate starting January 1, 2012 and continuing thru March 31st. The 5% will be continued again starting July 1 thru Sept. 30th. Don't forget, you'll need to call Chase prior to the starting period to sign up for that quarters rewards. It truly is the bst deal out there IM humble O. JCEJr

I have the old American Express Blue Cash card. 5% on gas after you've spent $6500 that year, 1.25% before that. Unfortunately the gas is almost always the cheapest at Costco around here, and that doesn't qualify for the rebate as it is part of a warehouse club.

If you are looking for a cash back credit card AND you pay off your balance every month so as not to incur any interest charges, I highly recommend the American Express Blue Cash card.
Earn unlimited cash back with no annual fee. Up to 5% cash back at supermarkets, gas stations, and drugstores. Up to 1.25% everywhere else.
You get a smaller rewards I think on your first $6,000 of annual charges.
Of course, with American Express you have to have a higher credit score and it's not accepted at all merchants. I have found excellent acceptance at nearly all gas stations. The only ones that don't seem to accept it are a small percentage of non-branded independent stations.
However, if you carry a balance on your credit card, you are much better served to get a low interest rate Visa/MasterCard from a local credit union and do everything to ELIMINATE your credit card balance. ANY rewards card is NOT worth it if you are paying high interest rates!
