CNG Bi-Fuel F-350 vs. VW TDI vs. BMW 5-Series: Discover Which Wins The Fuel-Economy Title

NGT News -- Venchurs Vehicle Systems says one of its converted compressed natural gas (CNG) bi-fuel Ford F-350 pickup trucks was recently pitted against a Volkswagen Passat TDI and a BMW 5-Series on the History Channel's "Top Gear" program to determine which vehicle offered the best fuel economy.

The episode, which will re-air on Thurs., Sept. 13, at 11:00 p.m. Eastern, was dubbed "One Tank." The show's hosts were required to drive from Portland, Ore., to San Francisco without stopping for fuel.

Venchurs, which is keeping the results of the match-up close to its chest, commented only that the CNG bi-fuel truck "performed extremely well in the test, highlighting its long-range capabilities and the seamless transition from CNG to gasoline operation."

I think this is overkill. I have never heard of anybody that is not in favor of CNG vehicles. The only thing I have heard negative about CNG is nobody seems to know how much it cost to retro fit a vehicle with a CHG kit.

Funny languageman 1. Yep it's one or the other.

Of course the truck is quantity of fuel not really efficiency you would think. Then they added 400 lbs to the trunk of the VW. to come closer to the BMW weight.

Then you have to watch a video to see what happens.

Haven't checked the article, but I'm certain it'll be the VW or BMW.

Should be interesting to see who won... I bet they are going to tell us that it was the Ford F-350 pickup truck.

Sounds like we are doomed to repeat history and relive a concept that didnt work the first time around. The late 80's and early 90's were to be the birth of the CNG industry.

“what are they trying to prove?”

It seems pretty clear that they are trying to prove that NG is the fuel of the future, at least the near future. It is still a fossil fuel but it is much cleaner than petroleum.
