America is the world's third largest producer of oil and its largest producer of natural gas. We could be energy independent if we tried a little harder.
We should be developing the distribution system necessary to deliver America's abundant, cheap and clean natural gas in the form of CNG. It should be our primary alternative to oil based fuels.
CNG could easily and cheaply replace diesel in all heavy duty cross country trucks, local busses and construction equipment. This would reduce the price of diesel for use in new high efficiency light trucks and personal vehicles. In turn, this would reduce the price of gasoline for use in new high MPG vehicles and the vehicles that the rest of us have to drive every day.
We will always need oil to make plastics, paints, fertilizers, pesticides, asphalt, medicines and many other organic things.
