President Obama said in 2010 that “the true engine of economic growth will always be companies like Solyndra.” He couldn’t be more wrong. Companies that are innovating and creating real value for consumers are the engine of economic growth, and they’re doing it without millions in taxpayer funding.

The government is too busy with religion, political correctness and high taxes.

If the new standards cause car companies to loose money, democrats will just bail them out again...

Throwing in more alternative energy vehicles into the mix will raise the CAFE standard. Or don't non-fuel cars count towards CAFE?

Yes - government interference makes new autos unaffordable! Your "Prius" is neither practical - nor "affordable" for me!
CAFE standards are a totally unnecessary, intrusive nuisance. American drivers who prefer higher mpg vehicles may buy them - and if they buy enough of them, the automakers will continue to make more and more of them.
If American drivers prefer larger autos or trucks and buy more them - the same will hold true.
The MARKETPLACE should dictate fuel efficiency - not the arbitray CAFE standards!

Tired biased opinion piece.
I welcome the decades of dragging automakers kicking and screaming to making safer more fuel efficient vehicles.

Are you kidding?
I fill up my Prius once a month and the most I've ever paid for a fill-up is $30. I save gobs of money because I have a fuel efficient vehicle. Sure, the car cost more to buy in the first place but I did the numbers before I bought. The first two years I owned the car was spent paying off the added sticker price compared to similar-sized gas-only cars. After that, it's been pure gravy. Gas was over $5 a gallon recently in California after a couple of refineries were offline. It didn't affect me a bit.
Bring on the CAFE requirements and other incentives for even more fuel efficient cars. It's money in my pocket every time I pass a gas station!
