U-Mich study: fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles dropping

GasBuddy Blog -- With gasoline prices declining since peaking in April, Americans are making fuel economy less of a priority, according to a University of Michigan study recently released.

Since the fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles peaked in March, it has slowly been declining. In the U-Michigan report, June's numbers showed another drop from May, declining to 23.6MPG. Even with the drop the numbers remain well above last year's figures, likely as manufacturers make existing engines more fuel efficient. So far in 2012, average fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles has remained between 23.6 MPG and 24.1 MPG...

Just more evidence that the average person is too selfish to do anything for the good of the country.

Then we wonder why our politicians are such schmucks.

People will buy what THEY want!
Fuel cost is just ONE of the considerations.
If you can afford $100 per week on a Hummer, God bless you.
It is individual CHOICE, not some fat ass bureaucrat's in DC!

I was just in Europe where I rented a compact diesel vehicle that got an average of 43 mpg (my actual numbers). Why don't we have more of those here?

I'd be willing to be it's not based on the vehicle but the driver itself.

I will not change my vehicle decision based on 1 or 2 mpg which it seems is enough for this data to be skewed. give me an extra 10 or 20 mpg and i'll listen.

With horsepower ranges well over 250 and many over 300 I can see why. I'm a horsepower guy but a Hyundai Sonata over 300hp, I think, is unnecessary today.

EPA estimates are exagerated anyway. Measure mpg in the real world of city driving and they are much lower still.

Still is and always will be consumer driven desires.
As long as the companies can follow it, they won't need !@# bailouts.

Very few if any get the mileage that is posted anyway. It is very little help since it is a controlled test.
