someone needs to step back. Sounds like a bad marriage that's gone worse and neither side is willing to admit their own flaws.

"we must be diligent in our quest for energy and protecting our environment."....CdnLynx.
Then lets be diligent with renewable energy and leave the pipelines to you folks! Not here in the US.

Yes Canada has Tar sands, it also has conventional oil that comes from oil rigs, predominately in Alberta, but also in Sask and B.C. and N.W.T.
If tar sands were a"a very low net energy value" suspect they would not be putting that much effort into mining the tar sands.
You Tube also has video footage from LicenseToDrill
jrsva - would it be fair of me to make comments (rhetoric), like State of Virgina is only good for dirty tobacco; would that be a fair assessment; suspect your comment would be; that is a unfair assumption; you would be correct.
Don't fixate on TarSands or dirty oil, etc. and its corresponding rhetoric; pipelines are for conventional crude oil also.
this time they’re drilling for black gold in the frozen land of the Canadian North. After last season’s monster gas discovery, MGM Energy Corp. gambles on a wildcat oil well just south of the Arctic Circle. Penn West Exploration has a different strategy; they’re drilling in an old oil reservoir, betting new technology will unlock another bonanza.

Bringing the N.W.T into this by the politicians is beyond ridiculous; The northern territories would only be good if we wanted to sell to the polar bears. This route is full of too many hazards. This is beyond ridiculous; only proves to the stupidity of politicians. Presently this is a fight between provinces and the First Nations; (First Nations within Canada have more autonomy then in America); this is posturing by factions trying to gain greater economic benefits, really believe this is out of Cdn. federal hands (only Cdn. Constitutional lawyers can say for sure), suspect Ottawa could bring pressure to bear on the squabbling factions. Canadians are no different then the republicans or democrats in U.S., with their political posturing. Your just beginning to see Canadians and their democratic fighting between parties; we Cdns have been witnessing American politics for a very long time; America is seeing that Cdn's are the little mouse in bed with a gigantic elephant.

Hopefully another nail in the coffin for this unworthy Albertan substitute for oil. If PM Harper had Canada’s best interests in mind he would leave that nasty stuff in the ground. Extraction of bitumen from the tar sands requires huge amounts of energy and water, leaving an environmental waste land. The product is the dirtiest oil known and has a very low net energy value. Perhaps future generations will find a way to develop it responsibly. That is not possible now.

PurpleBear - Why should they build refineries in N. Dakota, when the refineries on the Gulf coast are not at capacity. Your own logic, what makes you think, you will not get any oil. Shipping oil by any other route outside of American territory would only increase the likelihood of oil not being refined and/or utilized in America; even though info from the "Trans Mountain pipeline" article refutes that. Shipping the oil to the Gulf would make it easier for America to utilize their other internal pipelines to American markets/consumers. Maintaining pipelines and actively refining raw crude are not temporary jobs. Building pipelines anywhere in the world are basically temporary; never forget the on-going maintenance required and the manpower required for the refineries. They won't be Cdn's working in the U.S on either maint. or refining. Your own laws prevent Cdn's usually from getting green cards. "LetemEatCake" I am surprised you would rubber stamped this fallacy; realize you are a conservationist, that is a good thing, I agreed with with conservation however we need petroleum products and we must be diligent in our quest for energy and protecting our environment.

True desperation now by PM Harper and his band of Merry Albertan business leaders. Now they want to drag done the environment of the NWT and have made Premier McLeod delusional too. Where is your port to handle all the caustic crude Mr. McLeod??? Of course you can redirect some of the heat residue from burning all that natural gas in Alberta to manage an ice free port, if you build one!

There is too much rhetoric re: shipping oil to China. Presently Cdn. oil via the "Trans Mountain" pipeline is being loaded on Tankers in B.C for delivery to California refineries. Do people really believe that Saudi Arabia only sells their oil only to one country. They don't, they sell to many. So, if and when Cdn. pipelines are expanded to handle a greater qty of Cdn. oil, there is a good chance that oil would be shipped world wide; not specifically earmarked to only one country.
Trans Mountain: The other Pacific pipeline
The question of corrosive oil, well, what are people grasping at here; are they the comments and agenda's of the opponents of the oil industry. Both sides of the fence here have their own agendas; take everything with a grain of skepticism. Little tired of both pro and anti oil, using facts and figures garnered from possibly biased or false agencies/org. I do know raw crude must be cleaned and refined prior to becoming usable petroleum products. Please keep all things in perspective and think about who is saying what and whether they may have hidden agendas. Think then form an opinion. The world is a global enterprise with global trade; even America ships products (including raw materials, wheat etc) to China. Pipelines, whether to the U.S or to B.C are easier, safer and cheaper!

People on this thread seem to believe that this oil is for the US. Unless I've missed a report or something we haven't and will not be purchasing a drop. The Canadians want the Keystone pipeline because it is easier to build it across the terrain of the Great Plains as opposed to trying to build it across the Rockies and the coastal fault lines. If Canada intended to sell the oil to the U.S., they could simply pipe it to North Dakota where refineries could be built to satisfy the northern and Midwestern market of the U.S. The real reasons they want the pipeline built all the way to the gulf coast is that it is easier to fill tankers for foreign distribution and export beyond the U.S. This is set to be refined into diesel which will get a better price in S. America, Europe and Asia, not the US. So the pipeline to Houston is strictly for the profits of the oil companies and these profits will be held overseas and not be subject to tax. So outside a few thousand temporary jobs, that's all this pipeline will provide the American middle class. The pipeline itself has very little long term benefit to the U.S. As for the 1%, well that means more gains in their stock portfolio … after all, isn't that what politics is all about?

The Exxon Valdiz spill was nothing like what will happen if a Supertanker loaded with oil & headed to asia runs aground on the pristine BC coast.

Red green I think you do not know the geography of your own country very well. Please tell me which port located in the NWT is capable of handling 200 Supertankers per year. Keep in mind the only ocean they border is the Arctic Ocean which is frozen much of the year.
I know global warming may get the ocean thawed eventually but not likely within thirty years.

No one wants that corrosive raw Bitumen going through a pipeline crossing their lands. Create jobs by building a refinery right on the spot and everyone will want the products from it. Maybe, they should drill through the earth and pipe it to China that way (:>).
