Americans sweltering in the recent record-breaking heatwave may not believe it - but it seems that our ancestors suffered through much hotter summers in times gone by, several of them within the last 2,000 years. A new study measuring temperatures over the past two millennia has concluded that in fact the temperatures seen in the last decade are far from being the hottest in history.—Lewis Page, The Register, 10 July 2012

“We found that previous estimates of historical temperatures during the Roman era and the Middle Ages were too low,” says Professor-Do

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't force [him] to drink...

conversely:

Some people cannot read, but some are too blind to see the difference...

Here's a little bit of information about our current little "heat wave".

In the last 23 days, St. Louis has set 13 NEW record high temperatures.

Of those 13 new record highs, four occurred during the last four days of June, the remaining nine during the first 19 days of July.

For June, 3 of the 4 records broke the previous highest ever recorded temperature for the entire month of June, of 102F (28th - 108F, 29th - 106F, 30th - 105F).

For July, 2 of the record days broke the previous highest ever recorded temperature for the entire month of July, of 105F, and two more days tied the previous highest-ever record (6th - 107F, 7th - 107F; 5th - 105F, 18th - 105F).

Even more shocking - the average high temperature for that 23-day period, is higher than the average of the previous high-temperature records for that same period - that is the record high temperatures for St. Louis, since weather records began here in the 1800s.

That is, the average high temperature for the last 23-day period is higher than the average of that same period, for the highest-ever temperatures over the last 160-years.

LOL @ teafortwo, funny you should ask! It's well known how fetid the streets of towns and cities of that era were. Human and animal urine and feces, rats and plagues festered in the populace. Things are SO much cleaner now than then but dream on of the Utopia of the past tea, dream on!

There's always periods where it gets hot or cold, butI'm very surprised to hear it was so much hotter. You didn't have asphalt absorbing heat and autos pitting out heat either.

In the 4.2 billion years the Earth has been around, it has been hotter and colder countless times more than current times. I hope this is not really a surprise to most people if they think about it. The air has been more polluted from volcanoes in the past and it has been cleaner. Man has contributed in modern times to the pollution equation, and some time in the distant future an "event" will correct this. And I don't think mankind will like it.

But hey, enjoy the fossil fuels for now. When they run out something will takes its place....

wow, they don't know how to spell "sceptics" LOL
People are lazy. They don't check their spelling errors anymore.

I don't think I'm going for somebody or something saying they can say what the world temps were 2000 years ago. They must have one hell of a crystal ball to tell us what they don't know. When I see some of the other gibberish parading on that site, it's less convincing. Please find some real news.

Next they will be telling us that this weather is HOTTER THAN HADES. You can make those reconstructive computers tell you anything you want to hear.

I personally have not seen weather this warm in 76 years. When I was born, half of my life was spent in temperatures above 100 degrees before I was 3 weeks old.

Too many people have a belief that profit is bad, and Global warming is just the tool they use to justify lower human production.

The American Tax payer is finally starting to get wise to the Global warming scam.

This Planet is BIGGER that man, has been around MUCH LONGER than man and will still be here long after Man Kind has killed himself off. The Planet has destroyed its self many times and re-fixed its self each time, and their is very little that Man can do that will ever have any significant or lasting effect on the planet that the Planet hasn't done to its self in an Unbelievable and Horrific way many times. Global Warming and Climate change is constant, not man made, and all this Rave about it is simply Those wanting to control all of your Lives. Listen to them and give up your Freedoms, ALL OF THEM

And yet the (man-made) Global Warming alarmists usually base their claims on the miniscule spec in time represented by detailed temperature record keeping in the developed world since those records began to be kept in the mid to late 19th century. Even going back to Roman times in recorded history, two thousand or more years is only scratching the surface as to trends in the weather and thus the climate of planet earth which goes back as far as perhaps some four billion years. Positively ridiculous. Follow the money folks!

I remember back in just 1953 when thermometers broke their mercury bulbs when temp reached 125 here in SE Kansas. Everyone had to replace their thermometers after that heat spells. And cars were not air conditioned and few homes were as well. Keep saying this global warming is just a Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Bozo Obama trick to control more of Americans actions.

Vote NOBAMA IN NOVEMBER... Throw em all out of office.
