It will probably be prohibitively expensive.

Honda FCX fuel cell vehicle for sale in the US in 2015. A fuel cell converts natural gas or hydrogen into electricity and releasing water vapor as an exhaust. The Honda FCX is three times as fuel-efficient as a gasoline-powered vehicle and twice as efficient as a gasoline-electric hybrid. Fuel cells are better than a battery that can wear out and will eventually have to be replaced and fuel cells do require maintenance sometime! Hydrogen is very expensive to make, usually from oil or natural gas. Find a way to make hydrogen fuel cheaper. Find a way to make vehicles use more than one fuel so you can use the cheapest fuel at the time. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Cool beans! But then again, there have been tons of prototypes from nearly all automakers, and nothing has actually hit the market... I guess I should move to iceland...

will probably be too expensive to buy and the hydrogen will be hard to store. Keep the taxpayer out of this disaster.

They do not say in this article what the fuel would be but their FCX Clarity custom car runs on hydrogen. Presumably it would be that or, possibly, natural gas.

Their fuel cell car will probably use hydrogen, which takes more energy make than it will ever save.

Thanks for the post, @HumbleHarv. I do have questions about refueling the FCX Clarity. What is the range on a full tank and how much does it cost to fill up? Also, how long to fill up since you are pressurizing the fuel tank?

I would expect something like this from Honda of even from Toyota. Both are awesome companies with the best cars on the market.

Unfortunately, @milespergallon, hydrogen is still a very expensive fuel to produce, since it doesn't exist by itself in nature. Right now, the most economical way to produce hydrogen is to process it from natural gas in a method called steam reforming. That costs the equivalent of around $10/gal. If you wanted to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, that would cost around $20/gal.

Actually, @CC55, Honda's FCX clarity is a hybrid, it just has a fuel cell to supply electricity instead of an internal combustion engine to spin a generator.

I'm not sure if I follow you, @CarefreeVT. A fuel cell isn't a battery and the battery packs on hybrid cars are warranteed for at least 10 years or 100,000 miles.
I wish Honda lots of luck. However, I am afraid that fuel cell vehicles might not be ready for prime time, yet. They're still enormously expensive to produce and there are very few places to fuel them.

As I read some of the comments, I see so many misunderstandings and lack of knowledge of the facts.
Honda has making fuel cell vehicles for many years. Their latest, the FCX Clarity is a very nice looking car.
Range - the Hyundai or the Kia fuel cell vehicle has gone over 500 miles on one tank.
The GM fuel cell vehicle has enough power to do burn-outs. How much more power do you want.
The land speed record for a fuel cell vehicle is 302.5 mph. Same vehicle using a battery electric system did go 307.5. Chalk the difference up to the weather.
You can put a hydrogen fuel cell system in any vehicle - even a Corvette.
By the way, if all the vehicles in the USA were magically changed to hydrogen fuel cells, we already produce enough hydrogen on a daily basis to fuel them all. No more drilling for oil or natural gas in environmentally sensitive areas - all you need is water and electric power from renewable sources.
Of course, I drive a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle - it is great.

That's still an electric car and it could be priced out of reach to the average consumer. Even $500 a month for a lease is very steep!
