sometimes it's nice to have someone else pump, esp. on a rainy, dreary day, but the majority of self-serve in non-mandatory full-service states is generally a lot higher.

And gas in NJ...especially South Jersey, is still cheaper than many other places in the country to boot!

I can't think of many stations in NY that still are full service.

I use to love full service back in the day but now I would rather pump it myself if it saves me money on the fuel purchase.

Are there any other states that mandate full-service stations?

New Jersey is so behind the times. I've been driving for 36 years and I don't think I've ever had someone else pump my gas.

This is utter stupidity! Christie is a fake! He is not a conservative because most of his policies lack the capitalistic principles that true conservatism promotes. Why is the state micro-regulating gas stations as to whether or not customers can pump their own gas? I'm guessing from what I read that they have safety concerns? That is nonsense! Then Gov. Christie states “People in New Jersey love the idea that they’ve got somebody to pump their gas”. Where does he get that from? Some poll?
In the "bluest of blue" states, California, we have had the choice of self or full serve gas stations for over 40 years. I am 49 yrs old, I started pumping gas in my grandfather's Mobil Station at 15. He had full and self serve. Most stations at that time had both. Over the past 35 yrs the consumers have made the choice. As California drivers know, one would be hard pressed to find a full service station where someone runs out to pump your gas.

Its a "job protection" racket, much like buying "insurance" to make sure that your business isn't burned down.

As long as it is still much cheaper than the adjoining states, I'll let someone pump my gas.

Make no mistake about it - this is all about the strength of the NJ Service Station Owners Association lobby and not about jobs. Yes, our gas is relatively cheap compared to other states, even with full service, but it could be cheaper still with self service. In an interesting loophole, diesel fuel is exempt from "must be pumped" and there are self service pumps readily available for those that use it.

Weird. Read all the comments made by New Jersey residents -- and they say they DO WANT self-serve gas stations! Politics, people.

It isn't like they want to ban full-service stations. Some people even like them. I prefer self-service but that's a personal preference.

All Chris Christie cares about being self-serve is the buffet line at Golden Corral. He can't get out of the car to pump his own gas though.
