The Fuel Cell Saga Brightens

New Energy and Fuel -- Ballard might hit the breakeven mark, with another deal done, for “adjusted” earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, a financial measuring number of operating performance that excludes certain items. Adjusted earnings suggest that true profitability is within reach.

Ballard isn’t alone – companies such as FuelCell Energy and ClearEdge are demonstrating that they’re closing in on that goal, too. Finally fuel cells can be cost-competitive and simply better.

Fuel cells are just not ready for vehicles – yet.

Fuel cells have made strides, as Ballard has shown in cutting costs, but the hydrogen bug remains – getting the fuel, hydrogen, in place from conventional sources is a whole system in itself.

time will tell if fuel cells will ever be working for mainstream cars. But it's not to say, that they couldn't be used for other purposes.

GM was working on the FUEL CELLS since before 2000. The only use Iheard that found was for big units to power a cluster of homes in no where. Other than that, it just cost too much to use.

Fuel cells were perfected thanks to NASA engineers and scientists, all federal govt. employees. The task today is to improve the process for the generation of hydrogen, our most abundant renewable energy source, and create optimal storage systems for it. Nano technology will allow improved storage capacity in a safe mammer for mobile use. It is all coming on fast thanks to dedicated engineers and scientists in both govt., university, and private R&D labs.

This sounds like good progress. Research takes time. Development and commercialization will take more time. I think we will get there in due course.

Keep plugging away. Despite current falling gas prices OPEC still has far too much control. It would be wonderful one day to tell them that the Western world simply does not need their oil.

Innovation at work. They say they are almost profitable... if it's without Government subsidies then I am greatly impressed... and assured of their long term existence.
