U.S. eases clean gasoline rules in East after Sandy

MSNBC -- WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. environmental regulator waived clean gasoline requirements through November 20 on the eastern seaboard to help ease a supply crunch after Hurricane Sandy ripped across the region's energy system.

"I have determined that an 'extreme and unusual fuel supply circumstance' exists that will prevent the distribution of an adequate supply of gasoline to consumers," Lisa Jackson, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, said in a letter on Wednesday to governors of the states.

New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and 13 other states had requested a waiver in requirements to sell reformulated gasoline, or RFG, in smog-plagued regions of the country. The waiver also applies to states in the mid-Atlantic including Maryland and states in the South

This action makes a great deal of sense in that it allows refineries that make conventional gasoline for areas that do not require reformulated gasoline to transport their excess refined conventional gasoline to the areas that are and will, for the next few weeks or months, experience shortages of the normally required reformulated gasoline due to local refinery and pipeline outages resulting from Hurricane Sandy. In these affected areas additional smog levels is the very least of the affected areas problems.

Would this same decision have been made by this administration that is so adamantly extreme on environmental policies if this were not a presidential election year with the election just five days away is indeed an interesting question?

I fear even an act of God will not wake us to the depth of our dependence on oil and wanting to be pampered by big luxo-box gas guzzlers! After this "crisis" is over, we will continue to pack our drives with big, gargantuan vehicles.

Never should have been such government regulations in the first place. Eliminate the red tape everyday, not just when the cameras are rolling and election is coming up.

You aren't going to just be fighting tree huggers. You'll also have to fight asthmatic (sp?) kids and the elderly who have trouble breathing if you want to get rid of the EPA.

So what they asking SHOULD MAKE FOR LOWER prices, since the refineries don't have to do EXTRA "work" to the gas.

But you know THAT won't happen!

They did it for the East coast, BUT the OUT OF CONTROL EPA would NOT do it for CA and the West coast a few weeks ago.
